Usage Procedure of Tween 80 (Polysorbate 80)

1. Pharmaceutical Use

Application:

• Used as an emulsifier and solubilizer. It helps to mix oil-based medicines into water in oral syrups and injection solutions.

Procedure:

• Tween 80 is mixed with the main drug solution at concentrations typically between 0.1% and 3%. It is usually stirred slowly in water or another solvent. Heating at 40–50°C may be applied if necessary to aid dissolution.

2. Food Industry Use

Application:

• Used as an emulsifier in products like ice cream, baked goods, and candies. It assists in blending oil-based ingredients evenly with water.

Procedure:

• Generally used at 0.1% to 0.5% concentration. Mixed thoroughly with other ingredients and sometimes heated to improve dissolution and stability.

3. Cosmetics and Personal Care Products

Application:

• Used to create oil-in-water emulsions in creams, lotions, shampoos, and similar products.

Procedure:

Tween 80 is mixed with oil and water phases (commonly 1% to 5%). The mixture is homogenized or stirred evenly, often with gentle heating, then cooled before packaging.

Precautions and Instructions Before Use

• Choose the correct grade of Tween 80: Food Grade, Pharmaceutical Grade, or Cosmetic Grade according to the intended application.
• Use appropriate amounts, usually between 0.1% and 5%. Excessive amounts may cause skin irritation or destabilize formulations.

• Store in a dry, cool place away from light to preserve quality.
